KENNETH ARNOLD COINED TH TERM "FLYING SAUCER" ... OR DID HE?!

On June 24^th, 1947, Kenneth Arnold was flying his private plane in the area of Mount Rainier in Washington State. Just another flight for this experienced pilot and business man. Little did he know, that this was not going to be ”just another flight”.

As he was looking out his windows, he suddenly saw nine, as he describes them, half moon shaped, oval in front and sort of convex triangle shaped in the back, objects. Flying in formation in the area of Mount Rainier. Sometimes in a later interview, Arnold described the objects as crescent shaped, or a flying wing. Being an experienced pilot he estimated their speed at about 12oo mph, by estimating the distance between two maintain tops he was familiar with, and the time it took the objects to cover it. 

As to the flight characteristics, he said they were looking a bit unstable, bouncing up and down like a saucer skipping on water. Over time, he gave slightly different descriptions, but still adhering to his original statements. Out of those different yet similar descriptions, it was actually THE PRESS that coined the phrase “Flying Saucer”, and not Kenneth Arnold. He also mentioned that he had seen flying saucers on several other occasions. So, as we can see, Kenneth Arnold is not the father of the phrase “Flying Saucer”, and furthermore, in this instance he didn’t see any flying discs or UFOs either. So, what did he see?

WARP DRIVE or STAR GATE TECHNOLOGY?

Regardless if you are into UFOs, Astrobiology, Extraterrestrial Life, Ancient Aliens, or Space Exploration in general, we are all after the same outcome: First contact with alien life. First Contact doesn’t necessarily mean contact with intelligent life, it rather means that the discovery of ANY form of extraterrestrial life is considered First Contact. However, it’s a big universe out there, and searching it with our current means of propulsion, is not going to be a viable solution.

Putting a few humans into a small capsule on top of a firecracker is not going to do the job. Distances in space are simply too fast for our current propulsion systems. So, what are the other options? Well, there are currently a few different projects under development. Nuclear based, ion based, solar particles and some other concepts.

However, none of these options will give us more than about 90% of light speed, at best, and that’s still way too slow for serious interstellar exploration. So, what’s left?. Answer: Warp Drive, or Stargate Technology. 

I can see that some of you are rolling their eyes right now: “But that’s Sci-Fi”. Well, not so fast. Both options have actually some solid scientific basis. While we are still some time away from building a fully functional warp engine or a functioning Stargate, the gap between Science fiction and science fact is closing fast. Even before Albert Einstein, formulated his theories about space and time decades ago, the idea of some kind of a “Light Speed” vehicle was already around. 

However, only in the last few decades, science started to seriously take a look at the feasibility of both concepts. We will of course take a closer look at the pros and cons of both concepts, and dig deep into the realm of space and time travel. However, it is clear that we can’t do that within one single article. So, therefore we will break it down into a short series so we can look at it in depth.

ASTROOCEANOGRAPHY: WHERE THERE IS WATER, THERE IS LIFE

Astrooceanography is a very new field of science, that, as the name says, explores the oceans on other worlds. NASA has created the Water worlds program, which does exactly that. If you are in any way interested in Space exploration, extraterrestrial life, oceanography or anything aquatic, you might want to take a look at this new field of discovery. We know that several moons and planets inside our own solar system have water on them. It might be in form of underground frozen ice, at the polar caps, or as a frozen surface blanket with a liquid ocean several miles below. As well as knowing about the existence of water at several places in our solar system we also have detected water molecules far out in space. Hubble and other telescopes have shown us that water molecules exist in other galaxies, nebulas and exo planets. And where there is water, there is most likely life. In order to explore all those possibilities,

NASA has created several exploration programs.

NASA’s water world program, the ocean world exploration program (OWEP), the network for ocean worlds (NOW), and several others. Some of those programs work in cooperation or as grants with different universities around the country. One of the goals is to actually send a mini submarine to one of the moons and have it explore the ocean there. The development is well underway. There are also several other ideas under consideration, as on how to explore those watery worlds. One of those ideas, is to send a small probe to the surface of one of the moons, and have it melt itself, powered by a small nuclear reactor, through the ice layer from the surface, all the way down to the liquid ocean below.

This is just an overview about all the programs, technologies and exploration that is planned for the not too distance future. We will get into details along the way in later articles. As technology advances rapidly, with every new telescope we are sending into space, we will discover more and more details about water on other worlds. This series of articles will stay well on top of it and follow the adventure closely.

ASTROBOTANY: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SPACE EXPLORATION AND ECO FRIENDLY LIVING

No matter if you are into Aquaponics, Farming, Gardening or anything else Green,  believe me there is a connection to space exploration, and not just one, but several. This is gonna be just a short overview, or otherwise this article would just be too long. okay, lets get started.

If we going to do long term Space Travel and colonization, we have to feed the crew. Period. That simple. As you can imagine, endless supply lines with cargo ships isn't gonna do the trick. Just not practical. We need something on site, just like here on earth, something recyclable and something that doesn't need a whole lot of resupplying. That's where aquaculture, more specific aquaponics comes into play.  A closed circuit Aquaponics system can produce needed vegetables and a variety of seafood, it doesn't need a lot of "topping off", and powered with solar panels, its gonna be almost self sustaining. As i said before, we will get into details with other articles along the way.

Now, lets look at Farming and Gardening in space. Aquaponics is fine, but we also need some sustainable food production at the site of any colony. Of course, at the beginning it will probably be more on a gardening scale, rather than a large farming operation. There is of course the question of soil availability and quality. However, with new technology and some twisting of the available soil, its not gonna be too difficult to produce healthy sturdy growing beds. A few flowers, to lighten up the decoration would be nice too. NASA, several universities, as well as private space companies have already started to run experiments along those lines.

Last, but not least, the energy problem. Its clear and simple, that we need a steady renewable energy supply to make all those things happen. Solar panels are a given, but lets not forget that we can also use wind energy on other planets. Since there are storms on mars, some type of wind turbines are definitely a possibility. There are also a lot of other ways to create energy, but as said before, we will get into details later.

So, every time from now on, when you attend to your garden or farm, or you check on your aquaponics system, think about the possibilities to have all this working on other planets or moons. Who knows, one of you might just come up with a breakthrough.

What is holding us back from discovering Alien, extraterrestrial life?

We all know, that "They" are out there. That's why we are interested in UFO's, Ancient Aliens, Extraterrestrial life and space exploration in general. However, one of the biggest obstacles is propulsion.  Sending people or robots on top of a firecracker into space, isn't gonna cut it, if we really want to explore and find alien life. Some people might say, that the aliens are already here, and have, or have not made contact already. May that be as it is, one thing is clear: They didn't come here, riding on top of a firecracker. There might be reasons why the aliens haven't made official contact yet. We don't know. However, if we can develop similar propulsion systems, as we see on videos of UFO's, or descriptions in ancient texts, we can enjoy the same benefits as the aliens, and by being proactive, explore much faster and much larger regions of space, than we can with our limited technology. We can basically do the same that the aliens can do. As soon as we, through our own exploration, discover alien life, there won't be nor more doubt, conspiracy or cover up.
