The funny thing about the discovery of Proxima b — the closest planet to our solar system, which is also rocky, Earth-size, and potentially habitable — is that nobody has actually seen it.
With every new generation of telescopes, we are expanding our understanding of the universe. Very soon we will have telescopes that can actually SEE distant planets. With every next step, we are getting closer to discover alien life. First Contact is just around the corner.
