July 20th, 2009 was the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic flight to the moon, where astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first human beings to walk on the moon. 40 years ago, space flight inspired such awe that astronauts were hailed as heroes and celebrities by men, women, and children alike. 40 years later none of us, besides the most avid space fanatic, would likely to be able to name one astronaut in service today.
Most people don't think about, how many benefits we derive from space exploration. Everybody is looking for change on this planet, not considering that many discoveries through space exploration can enhance our knowledge of our place in the universe, and can therefore help to bring about the changes in our society, that everyone is so desperately wishing for. Also, space related technologies have long been a contributor to a better life on earth. So, as you can see, space exploration is vital to the enhancement of our society. First Contact will be the breakthrough event that we need.
